Alex Palou Continues Magic Carpet Ride with Sonsio GP Victory

Alex Palou continued his march toward history and immortality by winning the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, his fourth victory in five NTT INDYCAR SERIES races this season.

It was the Spaniard’s third consecutive victory in this race, an event record, and he became the first driver since Sebastien Bourdais in 2006 to win four of the first five races of an INDYCAR SERIES season.

Dennis Hauger earned his third victory in four INDY NXT by Firestone races this season, passing Andretti Global teammate Lochie Hughes early and powering to victory in the second race of the Indianapolis Grand Prix doubleheader Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Hauger drove his No. 28 Rental Group car to a 4.7739-second victory over the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship machine of pole sitter Hughes, who earned his first career victory in the INDYCAR development series Friday evening in Race 1. Myles Rowe finished a career-best third for the second consecutive race in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy entry.

Josef Newgarden has won the last two editions of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, and he showed strong pace Saturday morning on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden leaped to the top of the time charts of the warmup for the Sonsio Grand Prix with his final lap in the No. 2 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet, 1 minute, 10.5606 seconds.

Rookie Lochie Hughes led all 35 laps of the Indianapolis Grand Prix Race 1 to earn his first career INDY NXT by Firestone victory on Friday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

2024 USF Pro 2000 champion Hughes, from Australia, drove his No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car fielded by Andretti Global to victory by .7229 of a second over the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car of veteran Caio Collet.

Alex Palou Pounces at Last Second To Cruise to Sonsio GP Pole

The Alex Palou Show continued Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, as the dominant leader of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings used deft tire strategy and a fast car to run away with the NTT P1 Award for the Sonsio Grand Prix.

Palou, who has won three of the first four races this season, earned his second straight pole of the year and his second in a row for this race in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. He saved a set of new Firestone Firehawk alternate tires for his last run in the Firestone Fast Six and took the top spot with his final lap of 1 minute, 9.3417 seconds.

Lochie Hughes Sweeps Both Poles for Indianapolis Grand Prix

Rookie Lochie Hughes earned his first two career poles in INDY NXT by Firestone competition, sweeping the top spots Friday afternoon for the Indianapolis Grand Prix doubleheader.

Hughes held off fellow rookie and Andretti Global teammate Dennis Hauger to grab the top starting spots for both 35-lap races in the INDYCAR development series. Each driver’s quickest lap in the two-group qualifying session set the field for the first race, while their second-best lap established the grid for the second race. The drivers in the first group occupy the odd-numbered spots on the starting grid, while the drivers in the second group take the even-numbered spots.

RLL Trio Charges to Top in Second Sonsio GP Practice

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course has been fast ground for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in recent years, a trend that continued Friday afternoon in the second practice for the Sonsio Grand Prix.

RLL’s three drivers finished 1-2-3 on the speed chart, with Graham Rahal leading at 1 minute, 9.7242 seconds in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda. Rookie Louis Foster was second at 1:09.8626 in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda, and Devlin DeFrancesco ended up third at 1:10.0690 in the No. 30 EVTEC Honda.

Dennis Hauger Sets Early Pace in Indianapolis Grand Prix Practice

Dennis Hauger’s near-perfect season in INDY NXT by Firestone continued Friday morning, as he led the opening practice for the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Hauger was quickest at 1 minute, 14.2484 seconds in the No. 28 Rental Group car fielded by Andretti Global. Series rookie Hauger has won both races this season from the pole and has been quickest in every session but one practice at the season opener in March at St. Petersburg, Florida.

Alex Palou Leads Amid Surprises in Sonsio GP Opening Practice

Alex Palou continued his spring of speed by leading the first practice for the Sonsio Grand Prix on Friday morning on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, but there were a few surprises behind him on the speed charts.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship leader Palou, who has won three of the first four races this season, topped the 80-minute session with a time of 1 minute, 9.9790 seconds in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Three-time series champion Palou has won this race the last two years on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

Gearing Up: Indy Roars to Life This Week with Sonsio Grand Prix

The Month of May is truly now.

Later this week, Indianapolis Motor Speedway will begin hearing the roar of NTT INDYCAR SERIES engines, with on-track action on 11 days in a 17-day stretch culminating with the 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 25.

First things first: the Sonsio Grand Prix, which will be staged at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday (FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). The event’s first practice is 9:30 a.m. ET Friday (FS2, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network).
